Dont Be a One-Hit Wonder How to Keep Your Brand Relevant for the Long-Term - Personal Branding Blog - Stand Out In Your Career One of the things I quickly discovered when I was learning to network (and yes, networking is a skill you can learn) is that networking isnt a one-time event. Not only does the process of building a single relationship require multiple stepsâ€"dont even try to go from cold to sold in one conversationâ€"but building and maintaining your network for the long-haul requires ongoing effort and attention. Your ongoing investment is critical This same ongoing investment is also critical to building a brand. Thats why blowing an entire marketing budget on a single event isnt smart. Companies may get a bump in web traffic or even sales, but with consumers exposed to over 4,000 marketing messages a day (according to marketing guru Jack Trout), these companies are soon forgotten if they’re not consistently feeding the machine. While you may need to crank up your networking and personal branding efforts for a specific goal youre striving for, like finding your next job, expanding your business, or landing a book deal, if you dont have the energy or the budget to keep yourself visible once you reach your goal, you run the danger of becoming irrelevant and forgotten over time. And youll be starting from scratch, or close to it, for the next goal you want to achieve. Maintain visibility, relevancy and value Here are 8 ideas for maintaining visibility and relevancy, and continuing to add value on the job, in your business, and to your network so youre always top of mind: 1) Talk to people. Get out of your office and connect regularly with others one-on-one. Conversation helps to spread your message, but more importantly, it gives you the opportunity to absorb different opinions and perspectives and see what others are working on. You learn whats important to them, what makes them tick and how what youre each doing can help the other. Conversation also opens channels for feedback and questions so that you can address potential gaps and issues in your offering as well as in your communication. 2) Incorporate trends. To stay relevant, your products, ideas and skills should keep pace with the needs of the market. When I started writing and speaking about networking six years ago, connecting with people online isnt something I covered at all. In fact, I was very much an advocate of face-to-face networking. While there are certainly ways to waste time with social media, Ive now integrated into my discussions a handful of powerful online strategies that tie in well with the foundational principles Ive been sharing all along. 3) Test and refine new ideas. The best stand-up comics dont tell the same jokes for years and years, even if those jokes are a hit. They continually develop and test new material. For business professionals, we can test our ideas through writing, speaking, and blogging. Not only will you regularly exercise your ability to expand on and explain your ideas, youll see what gets traction and what doesnt. And dont be afraid of failure or criticism. Thomas Edison found 10,000 ways to fail at making a light bulb before he discovered the one way to do it. 4) Seek outside inspiration. Connecting the dots in different ways helps you tell a better story, develop more powerful analogies, and touch people in new ways. In prior posts here Ive linked going to the symphony and learning to ski with lessons on personal branding, and last year I started a video tip series called Passport to Networking to connect my personal passion of travel with my business passion of helping people network more effectively. Each 2-minute episode tells a brief story about the destination I visitedâ€"ranging from China to Europe to various US locationsâ€"and links it to a lesson about networking. [If youre curious, you can see the series on Facebook or YouTube.] 5) Read other peoples stuff. One of the biggest benefits of Twitter that Ive found is the exposure to a wide variety of new content. While there are publications, websites and blogs I read regularly, I do look to my Twitter base to surface links to new and diverse articles and resources. Some people might find this overwhelming, and you certainly dont need to read everything that comes across the stream, but if a number of people have retweeted something in your area of expertise, it’s probably worth a look. 6) Acquire new assets. Developing new skills, new partnerships and new platforms can help you refine your message, gain leverage and reach more people. For example, Ive led a regular teleseminar series and started a new BlogTalkRadio show to connect my email subscribers and online friends to experts in my network. Im exposing my audience and my contacts to each other, and at the same time, Im developing new skills in hosting and interviewing, which I realize I LOVE to do. 7) Make a regular commitment. Theres nothing like having an ongoing deadline of a blog post or a radio show to stay on track and force yourself to develop new content on a regular basis. Another option is to teach a class, or even have a standing meeting with an accountability partner, whatever you need to keep pushing yourself forward. 8 ) Venture beyond your comfort zone. The times Ive been the most uncomfortable and put myself out on the longest limb have been my biggest periods of growth. During the first talk I gave on networking, for example, I was shaking. But if I had stopped there, I wouldnt have reached as many people and developed the business I have today. According to Newtons first law, Unless acted upon, a body at rest stays at rest and a body in motion stays in motion. The common theme to all of these ideas is to find ways to keep moving forward and fight complacency. While staying in place is certainly less risky, only when you leave your protective bubble can you, your brand, and your ideas become more relevant, more accessible, and consequently, more valuable to your market. Personal Branding Interview #2 Brian Solis - Personal Branding Blog - Stand Out In Your Career Today, I spoke to Brian Solis, who is a new media leader, principal of FutureWorks, blogger, and author of the new book Engage. In this interview, Brian talks about what engagement means in the social media world, how he came to write his new book, how engagement and personal branding go together, and why hes re-branded himself recently. How do you define Engage and do you believe that people and business that fail to engage will seek to exist in the next decade? Engage was inspired by the original Social Media Manifesto published in June 2007. At the time, the manifesto served as a rallying cry for businesses to embrace the new world of participatory media in order to earn attention and ultimately relevance in democratized and highly influential online societies. As people were and are becoming increasingly selective about where they discover and share information, consumers are also expanding their social networks (or social graphs) and changing how they form and maintain alliances online. In the middle of the essay, I summarized the transformation of business landscapes and the ability to connect with customers and influencers as undeniable, wrapped around three simple, but resonating words that were intended to serve as marching orders, Engage or die. If we do not participate and eventually lead online interaction related to our business, then we are walking a path toward oblivion. Consumers, regardless of industry, have choices and if were not top of mind where and when theyre seeking information and direction, then we are absent and forgettable. Engage or die became the prevailing mantra of not only the essay, but also the social business movement and honestly, it is truer today than it was three years ago. To this day, it continues to inspire champions and it was also the inspiration for this book. As you can imagine, those words might not attract potential readers in a positive light. The message, and the book overall, is incredibly helpful and motivating and as such, the essence of the title was representative in one word and one word only, engage. Over the next decade, everything changes and while the realization that transformation is inevitable, it will only gather unstoppable momentum. The true value of this book is that it minimizes public experimentation and guesswork and helps businesses, of all shapes, sizes, and industries, to answer their own questions as well as the questions they didnt know to ask. Its designed to expedite meaningful and effective engagement strategies and escalate the brand within all communities of influence online and offline. What does Engage mean to you as a personal brand? Whats in play right now is something so profound the we are only on the verge of realizing its true impact and potential. The path that many of us are on today however, place us on a collision course between our personal and professional brands as well as the brands we ultimately represent. Social media requires us to engage transparently and as such, the networks and corresponding social graphs that were forming blur the lines between who we are to friends and family, peers and professional contacts, and also those we hope to reach on behalf of our business. Our attention is finite and its increasingly thinning to a point of diminishing returns. We, along with those who follow our online updates, will become selective in those we follow tomorrow, focusing our streams into curated and discerning channels of material contacts and information. Think about it this way, if youre the admin for a Facebook Fan Page on behalf of your brand, you usually interact with a captive audience, and as an admin, people see and hear the voice and avatar personifying the brand. But in order to grow the community, we have to attract attention where its focused, which means engaging in outside communities as well. When you do so however, you lose the brand facade and are now participating as the brand you. Now your streams start to cross as those who follow you may or may not be interested in the promotional updates that hit their news feed. Engage tackles this subject as it teaches us how to effectively embrace multiple personality order to maintain strategic presences for our personal and professional brands and the relationships that are important to each. You recently rebranded your blog from PR 2.0 to Brian Solis. Can you go over the repositioning? Do you feel that after carving out your niche, you can go for the more general audience? Also, if you wanted to shake the PR 2.0 branding, would it even be possible? How does this decision impact your core audience of PR practitioners? This is a topic that is heartfelt and one that continues to unfold daily. PR 2.0 was an overnight success over a decade in the making and thats not something everyone realizes as it is just now starting to get traction. As such, new PR is gaining awareness among the decision makers who can lead the communications industry toward significance and prosperity. However, the true story is the shift from PR to public relations and this crusade was captured in my last book with Deirdre Breakenridge, Putting the Public Back in Public Relations a book that is a must read for anyone in PR or marketing communications. Everything is changing. PR is also undergoing a renaissance much like service, marketing, advertising and all disciplines affected by conversational and participatory media. PR is also a topic that is debated in minefields. and I believe that in order to truly transform businesses from a position of introspection to one of an outward view, and in turn, bring about change from the outside in, PR, for the most part, does not travel freely on paths to executive offices, the boardroom, nor marketplaces. While internal groundswells are triggering responses across middle management, my goal is to bring both ends to the middle, evoking a reaction among leaders to accelerate change from the top down. If its one thing were learning is that everything contributes to public relations and this is why social media and strategic and meaningful engagement becomes paramount to the future of any business. Everyone on the front lines within social networks as well as those responsible for the creation and dissemination of social objects are now part of the public relations team. As a result, this becomes so much bigger than PR 2.0. This is now about the personification of a brand and its culture and the ability to connect it to those who can benefit from the interaction and alliance. And not a moment too soon, tbh. With all the wacky things weve been hearing about young people being miserable and not being engaged in the workplace, this research could be crucial. Updated research on the importance of play and playfulness to children could be just the antidote for this crisis.  We need to be reaching the next generation early so that they know the importance of happiness to their development. Its definitely important to Cambridge theyve been advertising the position since 2015. Last year, they also advertised for a Professor of Chocolate. You do you, Cambridge. Dont listen to the haters. Charles Darwin and Career Change - Jane Jackson Career What can we learn from Charles Darwin when it comes to Career Change?    As a career transition coach, all my clients experience career change in one way or another.I meet many  people who have been out of a job, are looking for a job or have experienced  a redundancy.   Some are fearful about whether they will get another a job.  Some are reluctant to learn the new ways to get a job in todays economic climate. I wonder, are they scared or are they spoiled?Perhaps spoiled because they have been living in a relaxed, semi-retired state basking in the sunshine at Noosa Beach, just living off the profit they’ve made from selling an investment property or living off the remains of their redundancy payment? Spoiled, perhaps, because they don’t HAVE to go into an office to work from Mondays to Fridays, aren’t accountable to any manager, or anyone else for that matter, and can choose to volunteer to Save the Earth or Save the Whales should they wish. Spoiled, perhaps, because they ar en’t ready to exchange this new and relaxed life for the life of work again?Perhaps Scared.   Scared because money is running out, the GFC has rendered certain investment properties a fraction of their expected value and they have forgotten the transferrable and marketable skills they may possess. Stalled by their circumstances, they have no idea what the future holds, and how to take control of life again.   Many in this situation have simply forgotten HOW TO SURVIVE in this market.Charles Darwin, father of the theory of evolution said,“It’s not the strongest of the species that survives, nor is it the most intelligent. It is the species that is most adaptable to change that actually survives.”How adaptable are you to changing circumstances?Reality Check Number 1: Getting a job is a full-time jobIf you think it’s any easier than that, you’re in for a shock. If you’re currently in a job and looking for a new job, your nights and weekends are going to be taken over by t his search. If you’re not currently working, your new job is to find a job, and you should spend a typical work day researching companies, making applications, meeting new people, attending networking sessions, following up on meetings, connecting with new leads, liaising with recruiters, expanding your contact base and, I certainly hope, securing and going to interviews!Remember, getting a job is a FULL TIME job if you are serious about it.   I have many clients who have said to me when they were in transition, between jobs, “I don’t know how I found time to work!   I’m so busy now I don’t have time to work on my job search activities.”   Well, Hello Reality.   Mars to Earth … enjoying life is great and good for the soul but if you want a job, you have to work at it.Reality Check Number 2: You must work harder than everyone elseNetworking is the key.   Yes, let’s not fight about it.   You have to become an expert networker.  That means you have to reach out and tal k to people, ask for advice, ask for guidance and gain feedback and suggestions on how to adapt what you are doing to be successful.On a quiet day, you should make a minimum of five phone calls and send five emails to your target market, even if there are no advertised roles. Research the Internet â€" it’s right at your fingertips after all and find an email address or phone number of a specific person.   Swallow your pride and make contact. Request for 10 15 minutes of their time to tell you about themselves and the company. Don’t ask for a job; make the connection, and if all else fails you have made a new friend. Each of these connections are a potential lead to where you hope to go.Research a company before you make contact. Research the person you wish to reach out to. Write an introductory email, follow-up letter or thank you note, check for errors and typos.   Most people don’t do this.   If you do this you will increase your chances of success.Reality Check Number 3: Stay organizedSet up a system for yourself to keep track of the companies you’re interested in, the people you’ve met, and those you’ve made contact with. Keep track of what you have done â€" when, who what and where. Automate reminders to follow up with those you’ve promised to maintain contact with.Keep in touch with the people who make up your Career Network.  Linkedin.com is a great resource and one of the best professional networking sites to maintain and expand your connections.   Send occasional emails to check in and simply say hello on occasion.  Perhaps send a link to an interesting article you read that you think they might find helpful. Ask your new connections to help you out by making introductions to new contacts. Keep track of your activitiesReality Check Number 4: There is no such thing as failure.   It’s only FEEDBACKFailure actually can be a good thing embrace it, and learn from it. If you don’t get a job you interviewed for, see if you can speak t o someone who can help you understand what you could have done differently to secure the position. Ask what qualities the selected candidate possessed to make them Candidate Number One.  What is rejection?   An opportunity to learn.Has this happened to you … not hearing from a person or a company where you submitted your résumé?   Yes, this is as disheartening as being outright rejected. However, you know that every person you’re trying to reach is busy.   It’s completely appropriate to follow up on unanswered emails, as long as it doesn’t turn into a hounding festival. If after one or two attempts to follow up the silence is deafening, just move on.   You have more fish to fry.  Perhaps the hiring manager was inundated with résumés and didn’t have time to get back to you, or the hiring manager was traveling on business and couldn’t respond.Despite feeling like you’re flailing in the wind, get comfortable with the unknown. It’s a learned skill. You will survive . Just keep in mind that when someone doesn’t hire you it’s not personal. They’re making a business decision, remember that and it won’t hurt so badly.If you need to dust off your resume and create one that really works in todays job market, How to Write a Resumé online course guides you step-by-step to create a resumé that works!Reality Check Number 5: Learn to adaptIf your emails are constantly disappearing into the ether, if you’re consistently not being selected for an interview or not successfully landing a job, it is time for you to think about changing.  Analyse stuff.   What is it with your resume?    Is it good, or is there something missing? Consider your skills. What is not in your professional toolkit that is preventing your forward progress? Maybe you need to learn some new tricks â€" think about retraining or upgrading your skills.Consider where else you could apply your passions, interests and skills. If you’ve been in one industry your whole life, and can’t find a job there, consider other industries that could benefit from your skills.  What have you got that are transferrable?   You may need a career coach to assist you to see the forest for the trees.   How can you be the solution to an organisation’s problems? Consider using your skills in a completely new direction â€" what is your true passion?   What would make you leap out of bed in the morning?  Who knows? You might find yourself in a brand new career!No matter what, continue to adapt. It is the ONLY way to survive.   If you are stuck, reach out for help â€" find a mentor, a knowledgeable friend or industry expert and talk to them.   Be open to suggestions and new ways of thinking.Reality Check Number 6: No whingingNo one likes a whinger.
